The last day of the month

Hi Guys,

Today is the last day of the month. Normally, private students don´t have a regular evaluation, so I invite you to evaluate yourself and answer:

1) Which new words did you learn this month?
2) Which good tip in grammar did you learn in August?
3) How many e-mails did you change in our Pen Pal Club?
4) How do you think the Pen Pal Club cat n contribute in learning English?
5) Do you think it can bring you anything else?

When we stop and think about what we are doing, how our performance is and think about our goals, things get easier to happen.

So, looking forward hearing from you, guys!

Ps: Even if you are not my student, think about the 2 first questions and try to be in a Pen Pal Club.
Use a vocabulary notebook and check it up every end of the month and see things into "numbers". It will help you to see your vocabulary and grammar growing! Click on the image to go to the origin website.

Think green: cans become beautiful vases and don´t go to trash!!!

Spring is coming and to be into the spirit, and also start the week seeing flowers all around you and recycling:

When the garden is especially exuberant, it seems you can never have enough vases. Make a matching set of vessels by painting metal cans in muted hues. We refinished soup, tomato, and coffee tins in assorted sizes, and fitted them with drinking glasses to prevent rusting. To fashion your own set, smooth jagged can edges with a metal file, then use a nylon brush to apply two coats of semi-gloss latex paint; let paint dry overnight. Insert a glass into each container, fill it with water, and tuck a few blooms into it (we chose pink and purple hydrangeas, plus lady's mantle and stock). Place several containers together for a bountiful display.

Recipe: Tekila lime coconut bars

This recipe just reminds me my friend Joana (she loves Tekila and different recipes) and Digo (he loves coconut).

There, Summer is saying goodbye and here, Spring and Summer are arriving, so guess what?

An incredible recipe for adults to enjoy the hot weather from the blog, the Creative Mama.

2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup cold butter
4 eggs
1 1/2 cups sweetened coconut
1 teaspoon lime zest
1/3 cup fresh lime juice
3 Tablespoons tequila
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Line the bottom and sides of an 9×13 baking dish with parchment paper or tin foil, letting the paper hang over the sides. Spray lightly with cooking spray.

In a medium bowl, stir together 1 3/4 cup flour and 1/2 cup sugar. Cut in the butter with a pastry cutter, or a fork. Press this mixture into the bottom of the pan. Bake for 20 minutes or until the crust is lightly brown.

While the crust is cooking, whisk the eggs. Add in the coconut, lime zest, lime juice, tequila. In a small bowl, stir together 1/4 cup flour, baking powder, and salt. Add this to the egg mixture and combine. Pour over the hot crust.

Bake for 25 minutes. The filling needs to be set and the edges will be slightly brown. Let cool on a rack for an hour. Take the bars out of the pan and slice. Garnish with powdered sugar and slices of lime.

Surprise your guest with this pie favors!!!

Well, I love party and surprise people. If you are just like me, you will love this tip from Martha Stewart.
I share it here to stimulate students and readers or visitors to face the challenge of reading some instructions in English and follow them and be happy with the result!

From the site:

Leftover dessert doubles as guest favors when packaged in boxes that are as pretty as, well, pie. Photocopy template at 400 percent; trace onto card stock. Cut out the image with scallop scissors along scalloped edges and regular scissors on solid lines. With a straightedge and a bone folder, score paper along dotted lines. Fold along scored lines, and secure tabs with double-sided tape. Line box with parchment paper, place a slice inside, and tie on a tag."

I really need my friend Kiki to give me some tips about papers and functions and vendors...just loved it. In Brazil, we real have the habbit of taking a piece of cake back home, right?

Pen Pal Project - e-group at Yahoo

Well guys, today we started as a Pen Pal Club. We created an e-group at Yahoo and it will improve our actions in our Pen Pal Project. I am so excited about it!
Hope you too!!!

To learn more about Pen Pals:

Pen pals are friends who maintain a relationship by corresponding through writing. Traditionally, pen pals would write letters and send them through the post. With the increasing accessibility to the Internet across the globe, pen pals are also corresponding via email, though snail mail is still often the preferred method. There are numerous programs you can enroll in to find a pen pal from another country. Teachers often implement such projects in the classroom because students can learn much through maintaining a pen friendship. For instance, they can learn about a new culture and brush up on their writing skills.
  1. Why Have a Pen Friend

    • In an increasingly globalized world, it is important to learn about other cultures and countries. Writing to a person and establishing a relationship with him is a much more personal way to learn about another culture than by simply reading about it or seeing it on television. Friends without Borders is a program initiated to enhance peace between India and Pakistan by having children from one country write heartfelt letters to students in the other and establishing friendships. Having international contacts also comes in handy when travelling. If your pen pal lives in a country you end up visiting, you can gain insider information on the best places to visit and stay. You can also improve your second-language skills by corresponding in it with your pen pal.

    Snail Mail vs. Email

    • Choosing to communicate via email or post is a personal choice. Correspondence through regular mail often conveys a sense of distance because you end up waiting a few weeks before receiving a letter, and it has a physical presence. Because of this, these relationships may last longer and have a deeper connection than those where pen pals correspond through email. With email, wait time is considerably less, so it feels more like a conversation. There is no postage required, and it is safer because you don't have to give out all of your contact information if you aren't comfortable doing so.

    Classroom Pen Pal Programs

    • Started in 1936, the Student Letter Exchange is the world's largest pen pal organization, with over half a million participants each year. The organization was founded by an American teacher wanting to add spark to his classroom. English is the language of choice. There is a small fee charged for the service. A small fee is also charged by ePals, an online network that connects students from Kindergarten through grade 12 across 200 countries and territories. Initiated in 1996, it was created as a place where teachers and their students could connect with other classes interested in using technology to assist in collaborative learning.

    Other International Programs

    • Global Penfriends is a pen pal community open to anyone. It is free, family-friendly and gives subscribers the option of corresponding through email or regular post. You can submit your profile to them and peruse the database to find someone you would like to be pen pals with. InterPals is another free pen pal site for users of all ages. It has more than 300,000 active users from more than 180 countries, making it one of the largest pen pal sites on the Internet. Visitors can add their profiles, search for pen pals and more. Interpals even has a language exchange program that lets you communicate with native language speakers.

Presente do designer gráfico David Henrici.

Especialmente meus alunos queridos.

Essa semana temos os seguintes testes:

1) Nível básico: Enough x Too
Enough: suficiente
Too: exagerado

Exemplo: There is too many people - tem muita gente
There is too salt in this soup - tem muito sal nesta sopa.

Teste aqui. Me conta o resultado!

Me conte o resultado, hein?

Por que estudar inglês?

Oi Pessoal,

Caso tenham dúvidas ou queiram compartilhar sugestões, just do it!

To advanced students - how to write professional, formal e-mails - how to send a bad new

Today I worked on how to write e-mails with Giselle in our class, so she could send her first e-mail to the Pen Pal Project.
We talked about the issues mentioned below (previous post) and also we watched the video here.
It is a good chance to take a look at how to write e-mails, structure, style and tips for professional messages, specially when you have to send a bad new to a customer or colleague.
The site that has the video recommends you watch it many times as a good chance to practice your listening and new vocabulary.

I will be very happy to hear from you about this video and how it contributed or not to your writing.

See you later Alligators!

             Dear Marcelle

Informal: Hi John,
                Hello Sue,
                Hi There!!!
                Hi Folks,

a) Nome
b) Idade
c) Onde mora

Formal: Kind Regards
              Best Regards
              Best Wishes

Informal: See you
                Take care
                Looking forward hearing from you
                Love
               Cheers
               * See you later Alligator

* We love using this greeting in our group.

I will prepare some more posts about e-mails and hope they are helpful!

Tip: softer towels

Are your towels holding less water than they used to? It may be that your choice of washing detergent contains fabric softener, which has residues that cling to individual fibers, rendering towels less absorbent. The next time you clean a load, add a cup of distilled white vinegar to the rinse cycle; it will remove the residue and restore towels' soaking power. In the future, avoid detergents with fabric softener when washing towels.

Tip from here.

Get well soon x improvements

improvement
noun /ɪmˈpruːv.mənt/ n [C or U] Definition
when something gets better or when you make it bettera slight improvement in the economy
home improvements
These white walls are a big improvement on that disgusting old wallpaper.
He's been having treatment for two months now without any improvement.

(Definition of improvement noun from the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

"Get well soon"
"Get better soon".

Sheryl Crow - Sweet Child O'mine

Hi Everybody!

Vamos treinar a pronuncia via web, né prima?

Sweet Child O' Mine
Sheryl Crow
Composição: Duff McCakagan / Axl Rose / Izzy Stradelin
He's got a smile
And it seems to me
Reminds me of childhood memories
But everything was as fresh as a bright blue sky

Now and then when I see his face
It takes me away to that special place
And if I stare too long
I'll probably break down and cry

Sweet child 'o mine
Sweet love of mine

He's got eyes of the bluest skies
And if they thought of rain
I hate to look into those eyes
And see an ounce of pain
His hair reminds me
Of a warm safe place
Where as a child I'd hide
And pray for the thunder
And the rain
To quietly pass me by

Sweet child o' mine
Sweet love of mine

Where do we go
Where do we go now
Where do we go

Sweet child o' mine

In, at, on...

Listen sempre pede a preposição to.

Pay attention, normalmente vem com a preposição "to".

Então Wil, na verdade, naquele e-mail, a preposição correta seria "to"...

Dinner Tonight DAILY
Everyday Food EVERY TUESDAY
Cookie of the Day DAILY
Summer Grilling THURSDAYS, SEASONAL
Craft of the Day DAILY
Martha Stewart Living EVERY THURSDAY

Language usage - council x advice

Veja as definições abaixo:

council
noun /ˈkaʊnt .səl/ n [C + singular or plural verb] Definition
• a group of people elected or chosen to make decisions or give advice on a particular subject, to represent a particular group of people, or to run a particular organizationthe United Nations Security Council
This play is supported by a grant from the local arts council.
• the group of people elected to govern a particular area, town or city, and organize services for itEdinburgh City Council
The local council has/have decided not to allocate funds for the project.
The town/city council is/are responsible for keeping the streets clean.

advice
noun /ədˈvaɪs/ n [U] Definition
an opinion which someone offers you about what you should do or how you should act in a particular situationSteven gave me some good advice.
I think I'll take your advice (= do what you suggest) and get the green dress.
Can I give you a piece of advice?
I need some advice on which computer to buy.
[+ to infinitive] My advice is to go by train.
We went to Paris on Sarah's advice.

Roxette - How Do You Do!

How do you do?

How do you do é respondido pelos britânicos assim:

-How do you do?
- How do you do?

Já americanos podem responder:

- How do you do?
- Fine, thanks.

"How Do You Do!"

I see you comb your hair
and gimme that grin.
It's making me spin now,
spinnin' within.
Before I melt like snow,
I say Hello
How do you do!

I love the way you undress now.
Baby begin.
Do your caress, honey, my heart's in a mess.
I love your blue-eyed voice,
like Tiny Tim shines thru.
How do you do!
Well, here we are crackin' jokes in the corner of our mouths
and I feellike I'm laughing in a dream.
If I was young I could wait outside your school
cos your face is like the cover of a magazine.

How do you do,
do you do,
the things that you do.
No one I know could ever keep up with you.
How do you do!
Did it ever make sense to you to say Bye
Bye Bye?

I see you in that chair with perfect skin.
Well, how have you been, baby, livin' in sin?
Hey, I gotta know,
did you say Hello
How do you do?
Well, here we are spending time in the louder part of town
and it feels like everything's surreal.
When I get old I will wait outside your house
cos your hands have got the power meant to heal.

How do you do...

Phrasal verb - look forward

"look forward to sth/doing sth

to feel pleased and excited about something that is going to happen

We're really looking forward to seeing Andy again.
I'm not looking forward to Christmas this year".

Put Your Records On

Corinne Bailey Rae

Put Your Records On

"Three little birds, sat on my window
And they told me I don't need to worry.
Summer came like cinnamon ,so sweet,
Little girls double-dutch on the concrete.

Maybe sometimes,
We've got it wrong, but it's all right.
The more things seem to change,
the more they stay the same.
Oh, don't you hesitate.

Girl, put your records on,
tell me your favorite song.
You go ahead, let your hair down.
Sapphire and faded jeans,
I hope you get your dreams.
Just go ahead, let your hair down.
You're gonna find yourself some where, some how.

Blue as the sky,
sunburnt and lonely.
Sipping tea in the bar by the road side.
(just relax, just relax)
Don't you let those other boys fool you.
Gotta love that afro hairdo.

Maybe sometimes,
we feel afraid, but it's alright.
The more you stay the same,
the more they seem to change.
Don't you think it's strange?

Girl, put your records on,
tell me your favorite song.
You go ahead, let your hair down.
Sapphire and faded jeans,
I hope you get your dreams.
Just go ahead, let your hair down.
You're gonna find yourself some where, some how.

Just more than I could take,
pity for pity's sake.
Some nights kept me awake,
I thought that I was stronger.
When you gonna realize,
that you don't even have to try any longer?
Do what you want to.

Girl, put your records on,
tell me your favorite song.
You go ahead, let your hair down.(go let your hair down)
Sapphire and faded jeans,
I hope you get your dreams.(hope get your dreams)
Just go ahead, let your hair down. (Baby, let your hair down)

Oh, You're gonna find yourself somewhere, somehow."

Language usage: Signature X subscription

Outra dica bacana de uso do idioma.

Sign - assinar
Signature - assinatura

Beijos,

Marcelle

Free printables to decorate your father´s party!!!

Language usage tips: Remember X Remind

Ex.: Remind me to bring the book you want to read. Ou com casos de similaridade ou semelhança. Ex.: Rodrigo reminds me Paul Mcartney.

Pen Pal - international Scout

I have been a Girl Scout for 6 or more years and I just loved. Nowadays, there are many resources to live Scouting in a world atmosphere. I met my student and friend Wilson at this phase of my life. So, I met my husband and love and also most of my special friends!!!! So, I really thank God to be part of Scouting.

One of the good things of being part of Scouting is making friends. And you can also have pen pals there, how?

Check up these suggestions for Pen Pal Program ideas - International Scouts, here.

I am surprised with the possibilities!!!

By the way, have you been a Boy/Girl Scout or do you know anyone that had been or is part of this?

Swing Dancing to Bill Haley and the Comets (1956)

Specially to Wil and to some students that heard me saying:

"See you later Alligator!"

After this song, this became "famous" among friends. It says here it was a cartoon that used the expression, but I think it was the song. What do you think?

Have fun with the video and also take a look at the lyric and sing together:

Well, I saw my baby walkin'
With another man today
Well, I saw my baby walkin'
With another man today
When I asked her what's the matter
This is what I heard her say

See you later alligator
After 'while crocodile
See you later alligator
After 'while crocodile
Can't you see you're in my way now
Don't you know you cramp my style

When I thought of what she told me
Nearly made me lose my head
When I thought of what she told me
Nearly made me lose my head
But the next time that I saw her
Reminded her of what she said

See you later alligator
After 'while crocodile
See you later alligator
After 'while crocodile
Can't you see you're in my way now
Don't you know you cramp my style

[Instrumental Interlude]

She said, I'm sorry pretty baby
You know my love is just for you
She said, I'm sorry pretty baby
You know my love is just for you
Won't you say that you'll forgive me
And say your love for me is true

I said wait a minute 'gator
I know you meant it just for play
I said wait a minute 'gator
I know you meant it just for play
Don't you know you really hurt me
And this is what I have to say

See you later alligator
After 'while crocodile
See you later alligator
So long, that's all, goodbye

EXTRA EXERCISE:

Pick up from 3 to 5 words you don´t know and look for the meaning and include them in your VOCABULARY NOTEBOOK.
